Submitting Missed Spam to Marshal

The TRACE team is always interested in samples of email messages that were not correctly classified by MailMarshal's anti-spam technology. This includes both false negatives (spam that was delivered to users) and false positives (geniuine messages that were blocked).

What is the best format?

The best format to use when sending these examples to Marshal is the email message file from the MailMarshal SMTP archives.

This method provides the message headers in exactly the format seen by MailMarshal.

Note: If you are not currently archiving messages, in most cases you can start archiving by simply enabling a default rule.

Why not just forward the email message?

Although it is easy to forward a message from the user's mail client, samples submitted in this way are much less useful. Many of the spam detection methods used by MailMarshal depend on details that are lost when a message is simply forwarded. Client software such as Outlook changes the format of the message.

How to submit samples

If you have an archiving rule enabled, you can use the following procedures to submit samples to Marshal's TRACE Team:

  1. Using the MailMarshal Console, locate the message.
  2. Open the detailed message listing, select the Details tab, and right-click the message name (as highlighted on the window shown below).
  3. Click Save As and save the file.
Note: By default the file name does not have a 3-letter extension. Please add the extension .EML to help identify the file type.

  4. Attach one or more files to a new email message and send it to Marshal TRACE spam submission address.
  5. In the case of false positives, follow the same steps but send the information to Marshal TRACE ham submission address. Marshal respects its customers' privacy and will not disclose any information contained within the messages you submit.
