Anti-Spam
MailMarshal SMTP is powered by a multilayered anti-spam engine which provides a consistent 99.5% spam catch rate with <0.001% instances of false positives.
Each layer in the MailMarshal Anti-Spam Engine is designed to work in sequence to gain the optimum mix of spam detection, accuracy, performance and management for business networks.

- IP Reputation Services and RBLs – this layer is designed to reject as much as 65%-75% of spam before it reaches your organization’s gateway, using blacklists of known spam IP addresses. It also employs MailMarshal’s innovative Automatic Adaptive IP Whitelists. This feature intelligently builds lists of IP addresses that your organization regularly communicates with, to ensure that your customers and partners do not have email rejected if they should become mistakenly blacklisted by a Reputation service.
- SpamProfiler – this layer uses spam signature (fingerprint) pattern matching to quickly and accurately identify a further 25% of spam. SpamProfiler receives updates from Marshal every few minutes. At this layer, as much as 90% of spam has already been rejected or deleted with a near zero false positive rate and virtually no latency.
- SpamCensor – this is MailMarshal’s proprietary heuristic spam filter which employs thousands of spam checks to score messages which have been allowed to pass the previous layers. SpamCensor specializes in detecting new types of spam that have not been encountered before. At this layer, SpamCensor detects a further 8%-10% of spam, bringing the overall detection rate up to approximately 98%. This incremental amount of spam can be deleted or quarantined, allowing end users to quickly check that an unlikely false positive has not occurred.
- Real-time Blacklists (RBLs) and URLCensor – this layer examines URL links embedded in messages and performs DNS lookups against lists of known websites associated with spam. This layer boosts spam detection to 99.5% as standard, without any special tuning or customization on your part. Once the MailMarshal anti-spam engine has been synchronized with the latest updates from Marshal, you can expect to receive less than 0.5% of the spam you normally would.
- Custom Policies – if you wish, you can define some unique preferences to customize your spam filtering settings. For example, you can use CountryCensor to reject messages from specific countries or you can enable personalized whitelists for end users, so that they can exempt specific email addresses from spam filtering just for them.
